L.S. Lowry Limited Edition "Piccadilly Gardens"

More Information

7588 - Limited Edition by L.S. Lowry titled "Piccadilly Gardens". This is one from an edition of only 95 published worldwide. Professionally mounted and framed. Supplied complete with a certificate of authenticity, signed by the Master Printer and a replacement valuation for £1500 (free of charge). Condition is excellent. Like the Post-Impressionists, Lowry was interested in recording the nuances of everyday life, basing his work on observations of the world around him. Inspired by the industrial scenes in his hometown, Lowry would stop and sketch during the day then develop a painting such as Piccadilly Gardens at home. His direct and distinctive style led art critic Jonathan Jones to call Lowry a ‘modern primitive’ to be ranked alongside such artists as Henri Rousseau. The view of Piccadilly Gardens is taken from the south east corner of the sunken gardens adjacent to Portland Street. The angle is looking towards the intersection of Mosley Street, Market Street and Piccadilly. There are crowds of people in the gardens; walking dogs, pushing prams and standing chatting. Rylands department store can be seen in the background to the right.. H: 76cm W: 95cm D: 4cm
