Lowry wrote a letter on 20 September 1930 ‘…as to the subject. It was a case of a woman found drowned (suicide) some years ago in Pendlebury, a large crowd seemed to come absolutely from nowhere in no time. The incident rather got hold of me.’ After a first showing in Leeds in 1927 under the title 'Something Wrong', this subject was shown again at the Six Manchester Art Club's Exhibition in 1930. The painting was the first purchase of a Lowry by Manchester art galleries.. H: 87cm W: 110cm D: 4cm
