More Information

7497 - Limited edition by artist Sylvette titled "The Cosmos Flowers and a Nude". This is number 1 from an edition of only 250 worldwide and will be supplied with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. She was a model for Picasso and in 1993 the Tate Gallery staged a major exhibition of Picasso's sculpture and paintings. A documentary film on Lydia, and her friend and mentor, was shown on BBC2 at the same time. In the 1950s, Lydia Corbett was introduced to Pablo Picasso at Vallauris on the French Riviera. At this time, Picasso was breaking up with his wife Francois Gilot, and Lydia's presence brought a new and positive phase to his work. She became the model for a series of forty works of art. She was known then as Sylvette David, but changed her name during this period. The 'Heads of Sylvette' a series of moulded metal sculptures which Picasso worked on through this time, introduced a new major innovation in this work. The Image - When I was a girl in the warm and dry climate of Vallauris, the pottery town in which I met Picasso on the Cote D'Azure, I used to wear ballet shoes, black, blue, orange and gold to walk around the town. My hand carries a grass which I used to nibble the stems of. I used to love pulling grasses as I sat in Picasso's garden. I have always loved fields of grasses and I used to lay down and hide in it looking at the sky. Picasso painted me like this and I have re-visited my memories and made my own painting from them. Who is the figure watching me? Is she my alter-ego? My soul? My paintings are intuitive and what comes out from my brush is in my soul, so I can't always explain what is in my paintings.
