For him, she had a very arresting face with a Grecian profile and he adored her blonde hair, so she became not only his muse but a great model. During this period, Picasso had an amazing creative explosion of work, due to her youthful innocence, undying devotion and great vitality and his work became an expression of his love and worship for her. The painting was created at a picturesque chateau in a small Normandy village which Picasso had purchased in 1930 and there Marie-Therese spent the week whilst Picasso’s wife Olga was only there at the weekends. Pablo Picasso was undoubtedly the most influential artist of the twentieth century and perhaps the greatest artist of all time. During his lifetime, his personality dominated the development of visual arts and he provided the inspiration or most of the enormous and revolutionary changes which took place. Picasso was born in Spain in 1881 and began to paint precociously at the age of seven under his father's tutelage. He studied at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and by the turn of the century he was shuttling between Barcelona and Paris establishing his reputation. He is perhaps best known for co-founding the "Cubist" movement but his work embraced and inspired an enormous variety of styles and techniques, ranging from painting and sculpture to etching and linocutting. Picasso was married twice and had four children by three women; he also maintained a number of mistresses, some of whom played a significant role in the development of his work. He died in April 1973, unquestionably the most significant name in twentieth century art. H: 85cm W: 76cm D: 6cm
