(Free of charge) With the onset of the demolition of the industrial north the figures in Lowry's paintings began to take on more importance. These paintings concentrated far more on the character of his human subjects who were often inspired by the tenants that he encountered in his job as a rent collector. Many of the artist's greatest industrial landscapes are composite an unashamed mixing of reality and imagination. The result is a symbolic distillation of the very essence of the industrial scene. Lowry had a recognisable style of crowds and painted people as simple dark figures. Although the brush strokes are simple each person has their own design and activity. The construction of the street scene is instinctive and subtle made of grey slabs and industrial fog. This painting also clearly shows the white impasto ground in which Lowry developed after 1928, and which provided the lustrous pearly quality in the painting.. H: 107cm W: 83cm D: 3cm
